Short description: The aim of the subject is to allow students get knowledge about plant and animal tissue cultures. Lecture program covers issue of characteristic and application of plant and animal tissue cultures and methods used in those cultures. The aim of the laboratories is to allow the students acquire skills in terms of obtaining and maintaining alive plant and animal cells in tissue cultures.
Full description: Methods used in plant tissue cultures. Types of cultures, their obtaining and applications. Propagation and storage of plant material in tissue cultures. Transformation of plants, methods of transformations and assessment of transgenic plants. Modified traits of plants. Isolation, separation and identification of eukaryotic cells. Obtaining and maintaining primary and tumor cell lines. Tissue and organ cultures. Transfection of eukaryotic cells. Cell cultures in biotechnical and medical application.

Learning outcomes: After completing the course student In terms of knowledge: 1. has advanced knowledge of plant and animal cell biology, 2. knows goals and techniques of obtaining and maintaining plant and animal cells alive in in vitro cultures, 3. has advanced knowledge of the use of organisms and plant or animal tissues in biotechnological processes, 4. has advanced knowledge of planning the biological experiments with using the techniques of plant and animal in vitro cultures. In terms of skills: 1. analyses biochemical processes in living cells and has ability to use these processes in tissue cultures, 2. has the ability to get, establish and maintain the cells alive in tissue cultures. In terms of social competences: 1. has social competence in the field of teamwork. Student is responsible for common accomplished research.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: 50% score of exercises, 50% score of lectures
